~Success in the O.R.?~

*************************

Do you really want to be successful in the O.R.?

I mean do you really, REALLY want to be successful in the operating room?

Hopefully you said YES!

But let me tell you a little secret most people will never admit to.

SUCCESS is something that really tends to scare people.

Yep, so often when somebody gets just a little taste of success, they have a little part of their subconscious mind that puts the breaks on and stops them.

We all want to be successful at work, home, and in life in general.

AND because the operating room can be a little more demanding at times than the average job or profession, you need a special skill to help you become more successful in surgery.

WELL, sit back, because I'm going to give you an EXTREMELY easy way to allow yourself to achieve your full potential in surgery.

We all know that Surgical Tech School is a must, as is experience on the job in an operating room.

However, you can still be a huge success prior to graduation and starting your first job in an O.R.

Here's the deal:

CELEBRATE EVERY SUCCESS!

That's it~

No matter how small your success is, celebrate it and tell yourself "I am successful at______"

You see, we are so hard on ourselves as surgical professionals.

This is partly due to the fact that we tend to be in a career field that doesn't have much room for error.

Believe me, I've beat myself up a time or two in the O.R. for one reason or another.

Maybe I forgot a specific suture...

Maybe I forgot a specific retractor...

Maybe I just didn't move as fast as the surgeon required...

Maybe I had one of those cases where I just kept fumbling....

We all have days like those and that's one of the BIG reasons we tend to be so hard on ourselves.

Maybe you're a student and you forgot the name of an instrument in lab...

OR maybe you missed a few anatomy questions on your last test...

OR maybe you got yelled at by your preceptor during clinicals...

WHATEVER the case, it happens and you will get past it.

You see, it is much easier for most people to focus on mistakes and bad days then it is for people to think about the small successes.

INSTEAD of beating yourself up or letting people make you feel bad, celebrate EVERY little success.

"Yes, I knew that was a Deaver, I'm successful"

"Yes, I knew she was going to want that 3-0 silk, I'm successful"

"Yes, I got the drapes in the right order, I'm successful"

"Yes, I remembered the steps in that hysterectomy, I'm successful"

"Yes, I just finished scrubbing an axilliary, aortic, bi-fem, with iliac grafts, and then assisted with the placement of an ex-fix, YES, I'm successful"

Listen, I KNOW what some of you are going to think, oh this guy is goofy.

Who the heck celebrates every little silly success.

WELL, SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE celebrate every little success.

Yes, they dwell on the success of every day and strengthen their minds for more success rather than the opposite.

Success breeds success.

Do you want to be successful in the operating room?

Start celebrating your successes everyday.

Do you want to be successful in Surgical Tech School?

Start celebrating your successes everyday.

At the end of your work day or at the end of your school day, take a moment and think about 5 small & simple successes you had that day.

Your mind will listen to the good stuff you tell it just as it will listen to the bad stuff you tell it, why not choose success!

The more you tell your mind how successful you are as a surgical professional, the more successful you will be as a surgical professional.

Do yourself a favor and get a jump on creating a successful career in surgery.
