Today I want to briefly talk about your O.R. attitude.

One of the attitudes I can never understand is when I hear a surgical tech talk about how much they hate their J.O.B.

This comment is usually proceeded by something like, "Oh, this is the worst job in the world", or "I wish I would have never become a scrub tech"...

AND then, they would say something like, "These surgeons think they are better than everybody", or "Thier attitudes stink"...

Usually I would just sit back and listen, wondering why (if they are so unhappy) don't they just do something else.

The surgical professionals who make those types of statements usually have many more issues in their lives than just being unhappy with their chosen profession.

Being a surgical tech is a very unique type of profession that can lead into just about anything you can think of in the medical field.

Don't let the negative attitudes affect how you feel about your career.

There will be times when you'll run into negative, unhappy people who sit around and gossip or complain about everybody and everything.

If you think about it, what type of job or profession doesn't have those types of people.

One thing I want you to realize right here and now is that your attitude is one of the biggest factors that will influence your career.

Just because you work with a difficult surgeon, or the circulator is constantly on your case, or you always seem to get the cases nobody else wants, should not make your attitude go sour.

Nope, learn from it and stay positive!

Although there are some nasty surgical professionals out there,,...

--> there are also plenty of nice ones, the ones who are willing to teach you, the ones who are patient and encouraging...

Whatever you do, keep your attitude positive.

Remember that you are not in a J.O.B. rather you are in a professional career.

If your attitude is such that you think of a surgical tech position as just a job, then you won't grow.

Being a surgical tech holds a lot of responsibility.

If you let the negative people affect you, you'll become one of them, which will in turn affect your performance.

I can tell you from experience that I knew very early in my CAREER as a surgical tech that I would advance my career over time.

And you know what, I did. Simply from keeping a good attitude, asking tons of questions and knowing that there are lots of incredible opportunities out there.

Anybody with a positive attitude in or around the operating room has a much better chance at a successful career than those negative professionals who like to sit around and complain about practically everything.

Be the best you can be and take a look at the section in the Surgical Tech Success Handbook that discusses "attitudes".

Stay positive, ask questions, study hard, and keep learning. That's the solid foundation to build from and work your way into becoming an expert in surgery.

Until next time~

Your friend,

Robert Prince, CST
