Students may be admitted as a
"first year" student and take one SUR course in the fall and one SUR
course in the spring while completing the admission pre-requisites. If the
course pre-requisites are already completed, then you will be admitted as a
"second" year student and these two SUR courses will be taken at this
time. The pre-requisites include two semesters of anatomy and physiology (must
have a cadaver lab), and English 101. Addtional courses must be completed if the
AAS program is desired. One semester of microbiogy is required. This can be
taken during "second" year but is highly recommended to be completed
before starting the second year SUR courses. Students may complete the AAS
degree after graduation with a certificate degree.

History: The Surgical
Technology program at Kalamazoo Valley Community College was developed in
response to a request from an area hospital in January 1989. The development of
the program was supported in part by a grant from the State of Michigan, Joint
Training and Retraining Investment Fund. The Surgical Technology program at KVCC
admitted its first class in the fall semester of 1989. PURPOSE The purpose of
the Surgical Technology program is to prepare graduates who can demonstrate
entry level competencies as Surgical Technologists and who can perform
satisfactorily on the national certification exam, and who have a foundation for
