Questions to Ask Before Having Breast Surgery

If you are considering breast surgery, there are a few questions you want to ask your surgeon before you make your decision.

The decision to have breast surgery is very personal. Not only must a patient decide whether they want the breast surgery at all, but they must also choose a plastic surgeon that they feel comfortable with to perform the breast surgery.

One of the most important things to do prior to breast surgery is ask questions. Ask questions about the breast surgery itself, and also about the surgeon, and their experience performing breast surgeries.

"I schedule a thorough consultation with all my breast surgery patients so that they are fully informed about all aspects of the surgery, including my experience, pre-operative, and postoperative care," says Dr. Douglas Hendricks in Newport Beach, California.

Being informed about the breast surgery is the first step a patient can make in choosing whether the breast surgery is right for them. It also provides a lot of information about the breast surgeon and whether they are the best person to perform the procedure.

Some of the best questions a patient can ask about their breast surgery and the breast surgeon are:

  • What is your experience with breast surgery? - A quality breast surgeon will have years of experience both practicing plastic surgery and performing breast surgery.
  • How many breast surgeries have you performed? And how many times have complications arisen during or after the surgery? - Some of the best breast surgeons have performed thousands of breast surgeries, and none of them have performed numerous breast surgeries without any complications. Complications happen for many reasons; a good breast surgeon will provide information about the risks being faced.
  • How will you help me if complications do arise? - This gives an idea of the breast surgeon's experience dealing with complications and what lengths they are willing to go to for their patients.
  • What type of breast surgery do you think is right for me? - The breast surgeon is the expert. They will be the best person to ask about the different options available with breast surgery and which option is best for providing certain results.
  • What do you think is the best implant to provide the results I want? - Again, the breast surgeon will be able to provide all of the information about the best implants for the results expected.
  • Do you have a portfolio of before and after photos? - Look at their before and after photos. Make sure that they have extensive examples of their breast surgery work.
  • What certifications do you hold? - A quality breast surgeon will be certified by numerous Boards or Associations, demonstrating that their breast surgery work has been reviewed and approved by other surgeons, as well as furthering their breast surgery knowledge.

A breast surgery can be a wonderful enhancement for a person's body as well as their self-esteem. By improving their appearance, a person can become more confident and happier with the way they look.

Although breast surgery can be a wonderful plastic surgery option for many people, breast surgery is not for everybody. Make sure the breast surgery is researched fully, and the breast surgeon has been chosen carefully before proceeding with the procedure.
